STAD in Europe

The STAD in Europe project is a EU-funded three-year project with the overall aim to reduce heavy episodic drinking among young people by restricting the availability of alcohol in the following settings: licensed premises such as restaurants and nightlife establishments, music festivals, public hotspots such as parks and beaches, and home drinking which also includes preloading.

This will be achieved by applying the STAD-model, including community mobilization, training in responsible beverage service, and improved enforcement. The STAD-model has proved to be a successful prevention strategy targeting binge drinking, and has shown significant effects on the reduction of overserving of alcohol, decrease of underage drinking in city areas, and the reduction of alcohol-related aggression. Moreover, the STAD-model has also proven to be very cost-effective.

In seven countries (including the Netherlands, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Spain, UK, Germany and Sweden) seven tailored STAD-based interventions will be developed (either focusing on the nightlife, festivals, home drinking or drinking in parks and streets) and implemented. Both the process and the outcomes will be researched. The project will result in an intervention manual applicable to all EU.

In Sweden, the intervention model developed will focus on heavy drinking among young people attending music festivals.
